If your dentist tells you that you need to have a tooth extracted, you may wonder what you have to do to get ready for the extraction. There are certain things that you can do that will make the process easier on you.

Take Some Time off Work

You will want to take the day of the procedure off of work, and possibly the next two or three days as well, especially if you are dealing with multiple extractions on badly impacted wisdom teeth. It will be uncomfortable for you to open your mouth at all, let alone try to talk to people. You will also be on pain medications for the first couple of days, which means you shouldn't drive.

Arrange For a Ride Home

Talk to friends and family to see if they can pick you up after getting the tooth out. You may feel a little loopy from any medication the doctor gave you, especially if they have had to work to get an impacted wisdom tooth. If your tooth looks like it would be difficult to get out, the dentist may suggest that you have it done under sedation, which means you will definitely not be able to drive yourself home.

Stockpile Soft Foods

Your mouth is going to hurt for a few days. Your doctor will probably suggest that you don't use a straw and that you avoid very hot foods, but there are plenty of soft foods that you can eat. Things like jello, cottage cheese, yogurt, applesauce, and soups can be really good to eat for a day or two, especially if they aren't too chunky.

Arrange For Any Necessary Childcare

If you have a young child who is home all day, or elementary school kids that come home right after school, you may want to arrange to have someone at your house who can help you with the kids. The sedation and anesthetic that the dentist may have used may make you very sleepy for the rest of the day, and the painkillers may make you doze off. Having someone you trust who can help with your kids can let you rest safely.

If you have to have your teeth pulled out, you want to make sure that you are ready for everything that comes after. Preparing for everything beforehand will make it much easier on yourself when you are in pain.
