If you or your child has crooked or misaligned teeth, your dentist may recommend you see an orthodontist for braces. While many people think of this as something done for cosmetic purposes, there are other reasons to have orthodontia treatments. Having properly aligned teeth will help with speech issues and can also help you to chew your food properly so it can be easily digested. In addition, straight teeth reduce the chance for bacteria to hide and grow between them so your dental health is improved. Before you go to the appointment to have the braces put on, there are a few things you need to know to make things go more smoothly for the next few years.
Pain
When you have the bracket and wires put on, there is going to be some pain. For the first few days you will want to eat soft foods that do not require much chewing. Have things like mashed potatoes and creamed soups on hand. Keep in mind that when you have a regular visit after the initial one, you will have another day or two of this pain. You can take a pain medication to help. Like acetaminophen, but this may not stop the pain while eating. Plan soft foods around each appointment.
Appointments
You will probably have to see the orthodontist every month for adjustments. In addition, you will still need to see your regular dentist for cleanings and any fillings or such. Be prepared to miss school and/or work to go to all the appointments.
Dental Hygiene
Brushing and flossing your teeth is more important than ever when braces are involved. Food particles can get stuck under the wires and around the brackets. This will lead to cavities and tooth decay if not promptly removed. Of course, working around the wires and brackets will take a bit of practice, especially when it comes to flossing. Ask the orthodontic assistant to show you how to properly care for your teeth to ensure you get them clean every day. In addition, if you do not keep them clean, once the brackets come off, there will be marks that are whiter than the rest of the teeth.
While braces can be an uncomfortable experience, having a nice, straight smile is worth it. In addition to the reasons a dentist, like one from Night & Day Dental, will recommend them, your self-confidence will improve and you will be more willing to smile and laugh with your friends.
